APNET - International Relations
In its International Relations programme, APNET promotes cooperation and interaction with international organizations that are interested in strengthening indigenous publishing in Africa. In addition, it collaborates with and lobbies gorvernments and public institutions in Africa for the recognition and promotion of the book industry as a vital contributor to the socio-economic, educational and cultural development of the continent.
To this end, APNET encourages its members, the NPAs, to develop constructive relations with their national governments, while at regional and continental level, it regularly engages with regional institutions, e.g. AU, ECOWAS, SADC, COMESA, EAC, etc. in constructive dialogue over the challenges and potential of the African book industry. In August 2003, APNET was accorded diplomatic status as an international NGO by the government of Côte d'Ivoire. This status should enhance its position in negociations with the regional bodies. APNET was also accorded the same status when it relocated to Ghana.
